Director Todd Solondz’s (Welcome to the Dollhouse, Happiness) Wiener-Dog is a sardonic comedy about a pet on a quest to find an owner. Beginning in a dog pound, we follow a nameless dachshund as he joins the lives of four different households. There’s the bickering couple with a sick son, a disenchanted film professor who receives no respect from his students, a bitter matriarch with a dazed granddaughter, and finally Dawn Wiener (Greta Gerwig) of Welcome to the Dollhouse fame, all grown up and just as naive. Sheila O’Malley of Rogerebert.com says, “With all of its humor (and there’s a ton), Wiener-Dog is one of Solondz’s sharpest visions of futility.”
