Punk rock is alive and well in, We Are Best, the latest film by Swedish director, Lukas Moodysson (Lilya 4 Ever). Set in 1982, the film follows two girls on a mission to create the best punk rock band ever. Trapped in the 7th grade, Bobo and Klara feel like outsiders with their unique sensibilities that don’t jibe with the super boring status quo. Surrounded by heavy metal wannabes and classmates who just don’t understand, the girls set out to express their true selves through song—the loud, screaming, antisocial kind. After recruiting a third member, Hedvig, an intense girl who actually knows how to play guitar, the band is formed, which gives outlet to misfits all over the school, providing a voice to the rebellion and heartache that dwells at the center of every sad 7th grader’s difficult existence.
