Based on Michael Faber’s 2000 novel of the same name, Under the Skin is a science fiction art film set in Scotland that centers on an alien disguised as a beautiful woman (Scarlett Johansson) who seduces and entraps men in order to harvest their flesh. To keep her accountable to her mission, she is overseen from a near distance by another alien passing as a male motorcyclist. Her compassionless nature keeps her agenda from wavering, until one particular encounter leaves her stricken with a sense of humanness that throws her off course, compelling her to explore what it might mean to be the form that she embodies. Richard Roeper calls it “one of the most polarizing films in recent years.”
