This Must Be the Place: Book Talk & Panel Discussion
Free Admission
6pm doors / 6:30pm show

When music thrives, so do cities – or so says Music Cities expert Shain Shapiro, Ph.D. Join a book talk and panel discussion with local leaders within the music industry and Shapiro from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, March 25 at the Capitol Theater, 206 5th Avenue SE, in Olympia to learn more.

Fans have long enjoyed Olympia’s unique and diverse artistic and sensory music legacy. Now, the City of Olympia is partnering with Shapiro to showcase his ideas for how the role of music influences cities, tourism, the nighttime economy, real estate and recovery.

Shapiro’s U.S. tour to promote his debut book, This Must Be The Place: How Music Can Make Your City Better, creates a chance for residents to hear from the author and local music leaders directly. Shapiro  was willing to contribute to the discussion after learning about Olympia’s rich musical roots. Olympia’s Creative District alone hosts more than 150 creative businesses and welcomes over a million visitors each year to downtown attractions, events and performances.

“Shapiro is a globally recognized leader on the convergence of music, culture and urban policy and we anticipate a lot of enthusiasm for his ideas,” says City of Olympia Economic Development Director Mike Reid. “The event is free and we want anyone with a perspective on Olympia as a Music City to attend. Your voice and questions add depth to the conversation.”

Participants may come to the event with these three questions in mind:

  1. What would a thriving music scene in Olympia look like to you?
  1. What are our community’s strengths and barriers?
  1. How can Olympia’s Creative District, a designation for attracting tourism, investment, creative industry professionals and building community pride, contribute?

Seating is first-come, first-served. Register for the free event here: https://qrco.de/shainshapiro/
