Dir.: Edgar Wright / 2013 / UK / 109 min
What started with Shawn of the Dead and Hot Fuzz ends with The World’s End, super-cool director Edgar Wright’s apocalyptic comedy for the ages. The plot involves five 40-something friends who reunite for a night of drunken reminiscing. All of them have moved on to adulthood, all except Gary (Simon Pegg), who is trapped in a mode of arrested development; a Goth child of the ‘90s, he’s still at home in his long black overcoat. Not one to settle for a calm night over beer, Gary convinces the others to join him on an epic pub-crawl called The Golden Mile, which will end at a legendary bar. As the guys make their way on their grand journey, they are confronted with what their lives have become, as well as the shocking reality that everyone around them has turned into weird robots.
Peter Travers of Rolling Stone calls it “the perfect mix between fun and funnier.”
Thanks to all of you… OFS now has DCP!
What we did together:
Thanks to all of you that helped make our dream a reality! Our new Digital Cinema system was designed and integrated by James Bond of Full Aperture Systems out of Chicago. James donated over $100, 000 in expert consulting, design, equipment and labor! Thank you James! Special thanks to all those who came out for our DCP fundraising events with Philip Kaufman at Waterstreet Café, our dinner with Elliott Gould at Goldbergs’ Deli in Bellevue, our reception with Elliott Gould at the Washington Governor’s Mansion, our screening of MASH with Elliott Gould at OFS, our screening of Pet Sematary with Denise Crosby, and brunch hosted by former OFS board president Sasha Cornellier and her husband OFS projectionist, Erik Cornellier. We also would like to take this opportunity to remember Shirley Dallas, a long-time member of OFS who recently passed away. Thank you to the friends and family of Shirley for honoring her legacy by supporting our projector fund.
Why it is important:
Olympia FILM Society will continue showing as many movies as we can get on FILM…but as times and technology change. Fewer and fewer studios and filmmakers are releasing new movies on film, so in order to continue showing new movies, we are going to be seeing more and more new titles on DCP. So come to OFS ready to see a beautiful image and great sound whether you are seeing a new movie on DCP or an archival 35mm or 16mm print.
On a technical note:
Now a word about our new cinema format, DCP (Digital Cinema Package); DCP is a cinema presentation format created by an international consortium called the Digital Cinema Initiative. New movies and digital restorations of classic films are available on DCP. The DCP standard includes an extremely high resolution image (in our case, our 4k projector and server provide 24, 8.3 megapixel images a second! Each image you see on screen is approximately 4000 pixels wide by 2000 pixels
high!) with uncompressed 24 bit, 96k audio and an a “expanded” color space well beyond Bluray or other “HD” sources. So suffice to say, OFS can show you cinema the way the filmmakers intended you to see it in the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries! Come experience our magic time travel machines at OFS!
