The Retrieval is a stirring adventure set during the Civil War. Thirteen-year-old Will and his uncle Marcus are living in Texas in 1864. Being African American, slavery hovers over them as a grim reality; that’s why they’re both beholden to work for Burnett, a white man who fashions himself a bounty hunter.  His specialty: escaped slaves. The man and boy are to lure unsuspecting runaways back to Burnett, who will turn them in collect the bounty. Will and Marcus play out the deceptions, if only to preserve their own lives. Things change when they’re sent out to retrieve Nate, a kind, reputable man whom Will instinctually sees as a father figure. As the man and boy lead the unsuspecting runaway to a grim fate, each has second thoughts, as life and death decisions are forced upon them all in a battle of wills. A well received film festival favorite, Joe Leydon of Variety calls The Retrieval “outstanding and nearly flawless.”
