The Invisible Woman portrays the private life of a famous writer and the woman who could only love him in secret. Charles Dickens is one of the best known writers in the literary world, but what do we know of the man? Ralph Fiennes plays Dickens, whose reclusive nature clashed with the notoriety forced upon him by his renowned novels. Married for over a decade, he is thrown off guard by his attraction to Nelly, a young actress in one of his plays. As their subtle courtship gradually progresses in the staid atmosphere of 1883 Victorian England, the secretive couple must cope with the slow creep of the rumor mill that will eventually lead to the destruction of Dickens’ marriage. Told in an intriguing, fractured style that spans time and differing viewpoints, Kenneth Turan of The Los Angeles Times calls The Invisible Woman “an exceptional film about love, longing, and regret.”
