Dir: Wes Anderson / 2014 / US & Germany / 100 min / DCP
Constructed as a detailed historical recounting told over dinner one evening in 1968, in the very location in which the story is set, The Grand Budapest Hotel follows the misadventures of concierge Gustave H. (Ralph Fiennes) and his favored bellboy, Zero Moustafa (Tony Revolori), during the twilight of the hotel’s glory days nearly four decades prior. When Gustave is framed for the murder of Madame D (Tilda Swinton), one of the Grand Budapest’s wealthiest patrons and a guest with whom Gustave was intimately acquainted, by her resentful son Dmitri (Adrien Brody), after it is learned that Gustave has been willed a priceless painting from Madame D’s collection, it is up to Zero to find a way to help Gustave escape from prison and prove his innocence. Randy Myers of the San Jose Mercury News says, “It’s a sobering message movie…that is joyously and purely Wes Anderson through and through.”
