Adapted from the renowned Markus Zusak novel of the same title, and praised by TIME Magazine for its “fine details of human strength and frailty,” The Book Thief tells the story of a young German foster girl, Liesel (Sophie Nélisse), who is taken in by a kindhearted couple, Hans and Rosa (Geoffrey Rush, Emily Watson), at the onset of World War II. Illiterate yet enchanted by the written word, Liesel’s appetite for books is nurtured by Hans, who teaches her how to read and encourages her to pore over whatever books she can get her hands on, despite the bans strictly enforced by the Third Reich. In order to keep feeding her bibliophilism, Liesel becomes a “book borrower,” working in secret to obtain the titles she covets. However, her secrets become much riskier when her foster parents agree to shelter a Jewish refugee named Max (Ben Schnetzer), who quickly becomes like family. As the war rages on and affects her household, Liesel must find a way to rise above her devastating circumstances.
