The inspiring documentary Sweet Dreams is about the quest of a group of Rwandan women to open an ice cream shop. Rwanda is a traumatized nation still suffering the after-effects of a merciless genocide; but there are some who will not be defeated no matter how bleak things appear. It begins with a woman, Kiki Katese, who creates a female drum troupe in an attempt to energize spirits. It works, as the women are revitalized while they dance and beat drums as an outlet for joy and rebellion from sadness. Seeing her inspiration paying off, Katese embarks on another ambitious endeavor: to encourage the women to start their own business. This is where the ice cream shop comes in, as we follow them on their mission to create empowerment through ownership, work, and the sale of sweet treats. Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter says, “Sweet Dreams delivers a rare uplifting story from a country that has seen more than its share of brutality and heartache.”
