SUSPIRIA (1977)

October 16, 17 & 19, 2025
Suspiria (1977)
Introduced by Olympia Film Society’s Jeff Powell on 10/16 at 7pm
The classic returns to the big screen! Jessica Harper stars in this horrific tale of a young student who uncovers dark and demented secrets within the walls of a famous German dance academy.
Dir. Dario Argento / 1977 / Italy / 92 min

“Late at night after all the people have gone home and the aroma of popcorn has long dissipated, there is a tonal and atmospheric change in the theater that makes my hair stand on end. I can feel the spirits come out of their hiding spots to finally take back their home for the night.

Creeping backstage, the eerie darkness is only interrupted by a small ghost light floating in the back corner shining on a ladder that ascends into nothingness. Age old walls whispering their chants and staring after my shadow with every step. While the ropes from the banister high above are wavering in the stillness, the massive chandelier flickers to life with the slightest of movement just outside the corner of my eye.

With the echoes of Goblin and Claudio Simonetti still reverberating through the halls from their performance here last year, I was called upon by the denizens of my favorite theater to screen Suspiria. It is my pleasure to get to program one of my all time favorites, not only for the wonderful patrons, volunteers, and staff of the Olympia Film Society, but for the real residents of the haunted Capitol Theater.” – Jeff Powell, Olympia Film Society
