The illuminating documentary Before You Know It reveals an overlooked part of our society: gay senior citizens. The unique situation that older gay people face is illustrated through the stories of three men. Dennis came out in his 70s after becoming a widower. A cross dresser, he’s finding it difficult to discover his place in his newly embraced world. Ty is an older Black man living in Harlem. An activist for human rights, he sees hope in the country’s growing acceptance of gay marriage. Robert, a longtime business owner, lives in Texas and runs a popular gay bar that’s famous for its elaborate drag shows. Through these men’s varied experiences an emotionally moving portrait is painted of proud lives well lived that are invisible to a community that tends to overlook its members after they reach a certain age.
