May 19, 23 & 24, 2024 2001: A Space Odyssey Programmed by OFS Volunteer of the Year, Jackson Hamner
Stanley Kubrick redefined the limits of filmmaking in his classic science fiction masterpiece. An imposing black structure provides a connection between the past and the future in this enigmatic adaptation of a short story by revered sci-fi author Arthur C. Clarke. When Dr. Dave Bowman (Keir Dullea) and other astronauts are sent on a mysterious mission, their ship’s computer system, HAL, begins to display increasingly strange behavior, leading up to a tense showdown between man and machine that results in a mind-bending trek through space and time. Dir: Stanley Kubrick / 1968 / UK & US / 143 min
“I chose 2001: A Space Odyssey because I’m a fan of classic science fiction, and its right at the top in the list of great sci-fi movies. I remember seeing it for the first time and being blown away by the cinematography and soundtrack, along with so many of its most iconic scenes such as the dawn of man, or HAL 9000s famous line ‘I’m Afraid I Can’t Do That, Dave’. The film is weird and beautiful and I cant wait to see it on the big screen.” – Jackson Hamner, OFS Volunteer of the Year
