In the Southern-tinged drama Joe, Nicolas Cage returns to the great actor form of his Leaving Las Vegas and Raising Arizona days. Cage plays the title character, a conflicted man who survives in a backwoods world where hardship and turmoil is as common as the stray dogs that roam. Joe is a foreman on a crew that clears land by poisoning trees. An ex-con who has had his share of troubles, as well as enemies, he is still a fair man and treats his crew with understanding. Lives change when he agrees to hire Gary, a 15-year-old from a broken home. Joe sees something of himself in the boy, who suffers at the hands of his abusive father, and decides to give him a chance. The events that follow will test them both in a searing battle of will and circumstance. Betsy Sharkey of The Los Angeles Times says, “Joe is a muscular film, its storytelling deeper, its setting striking, its acting resonant.”
