Dune isn’t just one of the most iconic Sci-fi novels of all time, it’s an experience. That is according to the surrealist filmmaker, Alejandro Jodorowsky (El Topo, Holy Mountain) who had high hopes at one point in time to reinterpret Dune into the cinematic equivalent of LSD. The highly entertaining documentary “Jodorowsky’s Dune”, the tale of a fascinating film that never came to be, unfolds like an absorbing graphic novel. Through storyboards, reenactments, and interviews, we learn about a grand undertaking that started in the early ‘70s. Jodorowsky’s idea was to create a sci-fi masterpiece, which eventually ballooned into a crazy mix of ambition and hyperbole. With a bizarre cast that varied from Mick Jagger to Orson Welles, wrapped in set designs by H.R. Giger and a spacey soundtrack by Pink Floyd, the film could have rivaled Star Wars if it had been made. Matt Zoller Seitz of Roger Ebert.com says, “The film is warm and inspirational—a call to dreamers everywhere”.
