It Felt Like Love is a coming of age tale of realism and depth. Fourteen-year-old Lila lives in Brooklyn with no guidance from her emotionally distant family. Spending the summer wandering aimlessly, she hangs out too much with her older friend, Chiara, who is constantly making out with her boyfriend and divulging way too much information about her love life. Lila pretends not to care, but secretly she’ s curious. She wants to feel connection and sees a relationship as a way in. So she seeks out the affections of Sammy, a tough kid who responds to a point. But the deeper she descends the more she discovers her complete naiveté—so she pretends, and is soon caught in a sticky web of embarrassing lies that are part fantasy and part glaring reality. Honest in its portrayal of a teenaged life, It Felt Like Love is a captivating and truthful and portrait of an inevitable right of passage.
