Dir.: Joel and Ethan Coen / 2014 / US / 104 min / DCP

The Coen brothers’ latest film is an irreverent comedy set in the 1960s folk scene. Llewyn Davis is a talented musician. Give him a guitar and a microphone and he can move anyone with his gift of song. It’s his personality that’s the problem. Abrasive to a fault, Llewyn is his own worst enemy and it’s reflected in his lack of career success. Talent can get you in the door, but good character keeps you on the radar. No one likes Llewyn. It’s our job to realize why—as he wanders through his life, bad decisions in tow, with only the presence of a cute, orange tabby cat to keep him tethered to the grim reality he has yet to embrace. Funny, clever, and filled with great music, Inside Llewyn Davis is considered the Coen’s best film since O Brother Where Art Thou?  Kenneth Turan of The Los Angeles Times calls it “Bleak, funny, and exquisitely made.”
