A favorite at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, God’s Pocket is a gritty black comedy in the tradition of the Coen Brothers. In the Philadelphia neighborhood nicknamed God’s Pocket, life is maintained through hard work with minimal triumph. Philip Seymour Hoffman plays Mickey Scarpato, a guy caught up in a messy plot involving murder and money. When his wife’s shady son Leon ends up dead, it’s Mickey’s job to dig up the truth and to raise money for the burial. What he never suspects is that everything that can go wrong will. Lying, cheating, and stealing are all elements in a convoluted plot that starts with a bad idea that grows into an ordeal that includes a refrigerated truck, a dead body, and dealings with a local reporter whose sardonic disdain for the neighborhood may lead to his undoing. Also featuring comic turns by Richard Jenkins and John Turturro, Tom McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter calls God’s Pocket “nicely offbeat and absurd.”
