Sometimes great artists are found by chance, while others don’t want to be found at all. This is the mystery behind Finding Vivian Maier, an illuminating documentary that reveals an immense talent whose work remained hidden until after her death. In the contents of an abandoned storage unit, treasure can be found; that’s what $380 bought filmmaker John Maloof, who finds a lifetime of artistic photography when perusing the discarded belongings of the recently deceased Vivian Maier. A street photographer whose work is at once iconic, Maier worked as a nondescript nanny. She never showed her remarkable work to anyone, but her camera and roving eye captured the truth, humor, and reality of life with a stunning, natural gift. An engrossing mystery wrapped in a story of an extraordinary talent hidden in the shadows, Finding Vivian Maier is the Searching for Sugar Man of the artistic world. Rob Nelson of Variety calls it “ an initially playful, ultimately haunting documentary.”
