In the mind-bending thriller Enemy, a man meets his double in a not-so-normal world. Jake Gyllenhaal plays Adam Bell, a history professor whose life is as mundane as his class lectures. Things take a turn when he watches a movie and spots someone who looks just like himself in the background of a party scene. Freaked out, Adam tracks down this person, Anthony Clair (also played by Gyllenhaal), a third-tier actor who is as wound up and dynamic as Adam is nondescript. The only thing the two men have in common is that they resemble each other all the way down to a distinctive scar. The mystery grows when both men make an unusual decision that could lead to a nightmare scenario. Like a bizarre episode of The Twilight Zone siphoned through the mind of David Lynch, Enemy will keep you guessing until the very last scene. A.O. Scott of The New York Times calls it “divertingly clever and effectively creepy.”
