Days of Heaven: 4K Restoration
Following its premiere at Venice Film Festival in September, the breathtaking new 4K restoration of Days of Heaven makes its way to the Capitol Theater this January. Shot mostly during the magic hour, Terrence Malick’s rapturous tale of love and deceit is widely renowned as one of the most visually arresting films of the last century. Now, following a beautiful 4K restoration, Nestor Almendros’s transcendent, Oscar-winning cinematography has truly never looked better. In the mid-1910s, a Chicago steelworker (Richard Gere) accidentally kills his supervisor, and flees with his girlfriend (Brooke Adams) and his little sister (Linda Manz) to the Texas panhandle, where they find work harvesting wheat in the fields of a stoic farmer (Sam Shepard). A love triangle, a swarm of locusts, a hellish fire—Malick captures it all with dreamlike authenticity, creating a timeless American idyll that is also a gritty evocation of turn-of-the-century labor. The new 4K restoration from the original 35mm camera negative was undertaken by The Criterion Collection, with additional support of Paramount Pictures and Park Circus.
