In the comedy Danny Collins, an aging pop star attempts to seek redemption from an empty life of excess. Danny Collins (Al Pacino) is successful in the vein of Neil Diamond. He’s been selling out stadiums since the ‘70s, singing tried and true favorites to his dedicated fan base that has aged along with him. But he isn’t happy—drowning in a lifestyle of extravagance and depending upon others to pen his material: Danny has become a parody of himself, and he knows it. When his longtime manager, Frank (Christopher Plummer), reveals a letter from John Lennon, in which the late singer touts Danny’s up and coming talent, a fire is relit inside him and he decides to reconnect with the natural artistry he abandoned, as well as reconcile with the people he left behind. Matt Zoller Seitz of RogerEbert.com calls Danny Collins “an appealing comedy with an unabashed streak of melodrama, sharp dialogue, and a superb ensemble cast, anchored by a lead performance by Al Pacino in lovable scamp mode.”
