Dallas Buyers Club tells the story of Ron Woodroof, a homophobic Texas man diagnosed with AIDS in 1985, when the disease carried a quick death sentence. When his friends shun him and the medical establishment provides little help, Woodroof organizes a “buyer’s club” as a way for him and other HIV-positive patients to obtain illegal drugs from outside the country to treat themselves. Matthew McConaughey anchors the film as Woodroof, a man whose life changes drastically with his diagnosis, prompting him to rethink everything he believes and leading him to become a provider of life-saving options and empowerment for a group of people he previously reviled. McConaughey portrays Woodroof as an arrogant and bigoted man filled with anger whose new friendships change the way he looks at the world. Jared Leto’s performance as Rayon, a trans woman who befriends Woodroof when they meet in a hospital and works with him to provide drugs to other patients, is wonderfully subtle and nuanced. Peter Debruge of Variety raves, “Matthew McConaughey and JaredLeto give terrific performances in this riveting and surprisingly relatable true story.”
