Based on recent events, Captain Phillips tells the gripping story of a man determined to defend his ship and crew no matter what the cost. Captain Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks) was the commander of an American cargo ship that was hijacked by Somali pirates. Brandishing machine guns and spewing threats, the small band of pirates held the defenseless crew hostage, demanding money in exchange for lives. As the anxious standoff stretches on, it’s up to Phillips to keep an overwrought situation from exploding into chaos, as both parties are forced to act out of necessity when the hostile circumstance grows increasingly volatile. Filmed in a realistic, documentary-like style, the Academy Award-nominated Captain Phillips is a fact-based adventure that offers insight and depth along with heart-pounding thrills. Kenneth Turan of The Los Angeles Times calls Captain Phillips “an exceptional film.”
