Dir.: Robert Altman / 1974 / US / 108 min / 35 mm film

The classic comedy California Split is considered one of the best

films to emerge from the 1970s. Taking place within the world of

professional gambling, it follows two men on a deluded quest to win it

all. For Charlie (Elliott Gould) and Bill (George Segal) the higher

the stakes the better. From the moment they meet, the kindred spirits

take off on a fevered journey that spans poker parlors, card rooms,

casinos, and racetracks—anywhere they can make a bet and win some

dough. But everything is not as peachy as it appears. Violent

confrontations, broken homes, and a night in jail are just part of the

game for these guys who are not only professional gamblers, but

gambling addicts wasting their lives away in the name of the next big

score. Known as one of Altman’s best and most effective films, Roger

Ebert of The Chicago Sun Times said, “Magnificently funny,

cynical…California Split is a great movie and it’s a great experience,

too.”
