Director Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine is a dramatic tale of a woman’s undoing. Cate Blanchett, in an acclaimed performance, plays Jasmine, the wife of a former a high-rolling investment banker (Alec Baldwin) who is sent to prison after swindling his investors. Cast off and uprooted from her life as a pillar of wealthy New York society, the now-destitute Jasmine is forced to move across the country to her sister’s place. Ginger (Sally Hawkins) lives an average life in an average-sized apartment in San Francisco. It’s an atmosphere Jasmine finds foreign, if not completely intolerable. Devoid of the material comforts to which she’s accustomed, Jasmine’s denial slides into delusion as she desperately clings to the luxurious lifestyle that is now out of her reach. Filled with pitch perfect performances, Blue Jasmine is considered one of Woody Allen’s best efforts. Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly calls it “powerful and enthralling.”
