After a long run at Shaw Brothers studio, director King Hu left for Taiwan and crafted his most ambitious, grandest work: A Touch of Zen. A fugitive noblewoman at risk of being captured and executed, hides in a small village and then must escape into the wilderness with a shy scholar and two aides. There, the quartet face a massive group of fighters and are joined by a band of Buddhist monks surprisingly skilled in the art of battle. Considered to be the film that legitimized beloved martial arts-driven Chinese genre films as “art”, King Hu packs in visual experimentation with balletic and quixotic battle sequences, transcendental nature scenes, and detective stories, giving way to supernatural indulgence in this astonishing 14th Century epic, finally given its due with a stunning 4K restoration.
