If you were a fan of “alternative” radio in the ‘90s, you’ll probably remember the incredibly unique Boston trio Morphine (Mark Sandman, Dana Colley, and Jerome Deupree), whose “low rock” sound was comprised of drums, baritone sax, a two-string slide bass, and Sandman’s deep, rumbling vocals. Formed in 1989, the band experienced the ‘90s phenomenon of indie-to-major label, local fame-to-international acclaim, gradually creating a die-hard fan base of those who had seen them live. Tragically, in 1999 while onstage in Italy, Sandman suffered a heart attack and died, after which the surviving members disbanded. In Morphine: Journey of Dreams, Austin, TX club owner and friend of the band, Mark Shuman, has used the full access he received to the band’s audio, video, and written archives to create a loving tribute. Focusing more on the band members and those who knew them well than on testaments from fellow musicians (although Henry Rollins and the late Joe Strummer are both included), the film presents a curated assortment of live performances throughout the band’s 10-year run. Don’t miss this chance to be (re)introduced to this one-of-a-kind group!
