Manieggs is a strangely ingenious animated comedy from Hungary that takes on American action film convention, and places it in a world where men are eggs and cinematic formula is ripe for parody. It takes place in a generic US city, where Johnny Cupido and his friend, Harry, have just been released from a two week prison sentence for a crime they did not commit. Their mission: revenge. Together they delve into the crime-ridden underworld to track down those responsible for getting them locked up. Their journey takes them into the depths of American action film cliché, where various gangs, from the mob to Yakuza, fight for imagined territory and virtually everything and everyone explodes or can be killed at any moment. A clever homage, as well as a pointed critique of by-the-numbers Hollywood blockbusters, Manieggs is so funny and weird that you’ll wonder, “How could I have not known about this?!”
