In the Seattle set comedy, Lucky Them, a journalist is on the trail of a groundbreaking story that intersects with her own life. Ellie (Toni Collette) is a music critic at an alternative weekly. In her editor’s theory, one huge story could throw their print publication back into the spotlight in the cluttered world of digital media. His idea is to send Ellie in search of Matthew Smith, a disappeared rock star thought to be dead, since he hasn’t been heard from in years. Though she is reluctant (it’s no secret that Ellie has a history with Matthew) with her being his girlfriend at the time of his disappearance. Through a lot of convincing, she reluctantly takes the assignment, dragging along another ex, Charlie (Thomas Hayden Church), an aspiring filmmaker who wants to make a documentary about Ellie’s life. Filled with great performances and clever observations about the local music scene, David Chang of Variety calls Lucky Them “an engaging and smart comedy”.
