Dir.Pawel Pawlikowski  / 2013 / Poland, Denmark / Polish with English subtitles / 80 min / DCP

Eighteen year-old Anna (Agata Trzebuchowska), a sheltered orphan raised in a convent, is preparing to become a nun when the Mother Superior insists she first visit her sole living relative. Aunt Wanda is a world-weary Communist Party insider once known as “Red Wanda” and is the polar opposite of her wide-eyed, innocent but not naive niece. Stunningly shot in black & white and set in Poland in the mid 1960’s, each frame could be hung as a work of art with lighting reminiscent of Vermeer. Ida tells the story of two fascinating women, each on a journey through darkness, while exploring the tension between the practice of religious faith and the freedom of secular society.
