Filmmaker Kelly Reichardt’s (Wendy & Lucy, Meek’s Cutoff), Certain Woman is a soulful meditation on female empowerment illustrated through the experiences of three women. Laura (Laura Dern) is a lawyer dealing with a tense client who is threatening drastic measures. Gina (Michelle Williams) is overtly focused on building a new home as a distraction from her crumbling marriage. Meanwhile, Beth (Kristin Stewart) is a college student who befriends a lonely ranch hand at a restaurant one night during her long commute. Together these stories coalesce, painting a moving portrait of women in modern society reflected through an expert lens of realistic empathy. Justin Chang of Variety says, “What (Reichardt) has wrought here is very much of a piece with her earlier work, and it’s eerily close to perfect.”
