In director Asghar Farhadi’s (A Separation, The Past) latest affecting drama, a group of friends are confronted with a tragic mystery. Three couples set off on a luxurious weekend at a seaside resort. Two are married, and the other are acquaintances set up by well-meaning friends. Elly is the odd woman out. She’s supposed to be a match for Ahmad, but it’s obvious she doesn’t feel completely comfortable, even though they pass as a married couple when introduced to the owner of the beach house they’re renting. When tragedy strikes midway through their stay, good times quickly devolve into suspicion, anger, and finally devastation when a truth is revealed that will change their lives forever. Stephen Holden of The New York Times says, “About Elly is breezy, then suspenseful, and gradually, crushingly sad. On its own terms, it’s a perfect film”.
