Winner of the Best Documentary prize at the Tribeca Film Festival, In Transit is the last film made by the late, great documentary filmmaker Albert Maysles. Shot in his trademark cinema verité style, the film follows passengers traveling three days from Chicago to Seattle on the Empire Builder train. Along the way we meet travelers who are at a crossroads: an apprehensive pregnant woman on her way home to give birth; a young man excited to meet his dream girl whom he has never seen; a single mom with four kids wanting to prove her worth to her disapproving parents; a wife escaping a bad marriage; a young woman searching for direction. Disconnected lives converge and find solace in the majestic act of travel on a train destined for a place in the world for everyone on board. Justin Chang of Variety calls In Transit “A lovely odyssey that proves a fitting farewell to an American ethnographer.”
