EAST OF THE MOUNTAINS

October 1-8, 2021
In person Q&A with East of the Mountains director SJ Chiro on 10/7

Ben Givens (Tom Skerritt), a retired heart surgeon and recent widower who learns he has terminal cancer. Determined to navigate his final days on his own terms, he shares the news with no one—not even his daughter (Mira Sorvino)—instead traveling back to his boyhood home in Eastern Washington with only his dog in tow. But the journey does not go as planned; the familiar landscape triggers memories and a connection with a kind stranger (Annie Gonzalez) inspires new insight. Based on David Guterson’s best-selling novel and unfolding against the scenic vistas of the Columbia Basin, this compelling character study offers a long-overdue showcase for one of cinema’s greatest treasures. Directed by Seattle-based filmmaker SJ Chiro (Lane 1974).
Dir: SJ Chiro / 2021 / US / 93 min

“Skerritt is magnificent in the lead role. Obviously, the part required emotional depth and the veteran actor is up to the task.” – Nathaniel Muir, AIPT

“Cinematographer Sebastien Scandiuzzi can’t help but find the beauty in the wide-open landscapes of Eastern Washington. It’s a hopeful view of human nature that makes East of the Mountain resonant.” – Stephen Saito, Moveable Feast

“How has Tom Skerritt never been the star of a movie before? It took a while—way too long—but now at 87, Skerritt delivers a performance that belies a soulfulness and reservoir of talent that has only been briefly glimpsed in his numerous supporting roles over the years.” – Eric Althoff, Screen Comment
