BURNING

January 4 – 10
BURNING

On the shortlist for Best Foreign film at this year’s Academy Awards, BURNING is the searing examination of an alienated young man, Jongsu (Ah-in Yoo), a frustrated introvert whose already difficult life is complicated by the appearance of two people into his orbit: first, Haemi (newcomer Jong-seo Jun), a spirited woman who offers romantic possibility, and then, Ben (Steven Yeun, THE WALKING DEAD, SORRY TO BOTHER YOU), a wealthy and sophisticated young man she returns from a trip with. When Jongsu learns of Ben’s mysterious hobby and Haemi suddenly disappears, his confusion and obsessions begin to mount, culminating in a stunning finale.
Dir: Lee Chang-dong / 2018 / South Korea / 148 min

“Is it a love triangle, a murder mystery or a comment on the human condition? Whatever you call this stunning, slow-build thriller from South Korean director Lee Chang-dong, it sizzles with a cumulative power that will knock the wind out of you.” – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

“This is the most absorbing movie I’ve seen this year, as well as the most layered and enigmatic.” – Justin Chang, Los Angeles Times

“All three leads are sensational (Yeun turns yawns and soft laughter into nightmares), giving performances that retain a sense of mystery that dovetails with the movie’s ambiguity.” – Manohla Dargis, New York Times
