In Bota, Albania’s official submission for the Best Foreign Film Oscar, contemporary lives unfold while surrounded by the past. On the edge of a haunted swamp lies an isolated village where citizens were once exiled during communist rule. Bota is a café located on the outskirts of the desolate territory. Within its confines life plays out: Beni is the owner and will do anything to make it into the big time. He’s also having an affair with his employee, Nora, who envisions a future together even though he has a wife. Meanwhile, July is saving her pennies to move to the capital, but worries about her ailing grandmother. As road construction moves closer, the future looms. Featuring beautiful cinematography and a soundtrack of Albania’s forgotten Tango music, Bota is a lyrical and absorbing portrait of modern lives lived under the shadows of what once was.
