THE LINEUP:

DEATH BED: THE BED THAT EATS (1977) – 5th Film
Guest Programmed by The Evergreen Film Society
“Just when you thought you’d seen it all — murderous houseplants, elevators, computers, even tomatoes — along comes Death Bed. Immortalized by comedian Patton Oswalt in one of his evocative on-stage comedic rants, this highly amusing bit of gothic surrealism takes place primarily within a stone crypt, where the only remaining piece of a demonic house sits in waiting for horny young thrillseekers to stumble upon it before digesting them whole.

Though most obviously ‘horror’ (with nods to familiar trappings like ghosts and flesh-eating), Death Bed also fits snugly within Seventies outré experimental conventions. Never really released after its lengthy post-production, Death Bed languished in the vaults after American distribution plans went belly up and a possible British distributor took off with a pirated copy. Fortunately for horror fans, Death Bed has finally emerged from his resting place to gurgle its way into your black, black heart.” – Nathaniel Thompson, Mondo Digital
Dir: George Barry / US / 80 min

BLOOD AND BLACK LACE (1964) – 4th Film
Guest Programmed by The Evergreen Film Society

Before Dario Argento’s Deep Red, there was Mario Bava’s Blood and Black Lace. At the Cristiana Haute Couture fashion house, models and their boyfriends excel at the art of backstabbing, blackmail, and snorting cocaine. That is, until a faceless maniac embarks on a mission of death! After the one-two punch of Black Sunday and Black Sabbath, Mario Bava unleashed Blood and Black Lace — the movie that perfected the ultra-violent sub-genre that would come to be known as “giallo.” With a mood that mashes together the elegance of a quiet rain on a summer night with the luridness of a trashy paperback, it’s no wonder why Martin Scorsese once referred to this movie as “an incredible moment for cinema.”
Dir: Mario Bava / Italy / 86 min

SPOOKIES (1986) – 3rd Film
Programmed by the Olympia Film Society

After taking shelter in a spooky old mansion, a group of travelers discover an ouija board and decide to spend the night. But they soon learn that playing with the forces of black magic isn’t fun and games, and it’s not long before they’re battling demonic creatures, shapeshifters, and other forms of evil! Of all of the bizarre horror films made in the 1980s, Spookies easily ranks among the weirdest. The film became a fan favorite thanks to its expertly rendered creature effects and is notorious for its bizarre production history in which its original creators (co-writers/directors Brendan Faulkner and Thomas Doran, and co-writer/producer Frank M. Farel), were fired and replaced by Eugenie Joseph. The latter added new scenes and re-edited the previously shot footage. Newly restored in 4K from its long-lost original negative, Spookies has never looked better.
Dir: Eugenie Joseph, Thomas Doran, Brendan Faulkne / US / 85 min

DARK GLASSES (2022) – 2nd Film
Programmed by the Olympia Film Society
Imagine if Douglas Sirk made a giallo! Dario Argento returns with melodrama, service dogs, and Playstation Portables. When Diana (Ilenia Pastorelli) is blinded by a serial killer in a botched attack, she takes in a young boy (Xinyu Zhang), abruptly altering both of their lives forever.
Dir: Dario Argento / Italy / 90 min

THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (1974) – 1st Film
Guest Programmed by The Evergreen Film Society
In 1974, five youths on a weekend getaway in the Texas countryside fell prey to a butcher in a mask made of human skin and his cannibalistic family, and horror cinema would never be the same. Violent, confrontational, and shockingly realistic, director Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre terrified audiences in a way never thought possible when it was unleashed on a politically and socially tumultuous America in 1974. Facing a storm of controversy, censorship, and outcry throughout its troubled release, this masterpiece of horror has stood the test of time to become a landmark motion picture and cultural milestone. We’re presenting it here in 4K.
Dir: Tobe Hooper / 1974 / US / 83 min

CURRENT COVID PROTOCOLS

Our top priority continues to be the safety of our audiences, artists, volunteers, staff, and the community. Beginning July 1, 2022, OFS will no longer require proof of vaccination. OFS strongly encourages and recommends when attending a performance at the Capitol Theater that all audience members wear a mask over their nose and mouth except when eating or drinking. Due to the continuing COVID-19 threat, it is critical to continue protecting and supporting those individuals who are immunocompromised or medically vulnerable, or who remain concerned for their own health or the health of their family or community. OFS encourages people to be kind and compassionate to individuals, students and businesses that choose to continue wearing face masks.

OFS management continually assesses the changing guidelines, artist contracts, and local government updates. We reserve the right to require health and safety protocols for all performances.  We will proactively communicate any change in health protocols with advance notice.

If you feel sick, have any of the following symptoms, or have tested positive for COVID-19, we request that you do not attend any performances:

Cough
Sore throat
Shortness of breath
Trouble breathing
