Visionary director Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak is a Gothic romance that revisits his work in smart, art house horror, reminiscent of Pan’s Labyrinth and The Devil’s Backbone. Edith Cushing (Mia Wasikowska) strives to be the next Mary Shelly, so she doesn’t mind her sheltered status. But when fate brings the seductive Thomas Sharpe (Tom Hiddleston) into her life, and she’s swept off her feet and whisked to a massive, crumbling estate, a myriad of strange secrets lie in wait that are beyond anything Edith’s imagination could conjure. Sheila O’Malley of Ebert.com calls Crimson Peak “a sumptuous, beautifully constructed tale that feels both archaic and inviting.”
