WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS
The latest project from Flight of the Conchords and Eagle vs. Shark alums Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, What We Do in the Shadows is Christopher-Guest-by-way-of-Edgar-Wright mockumentary that could have been titled Real (Undead) World: Wellington. Four vampires ranging in age from 183 to 8000 share a home into which they invite a New Zealand documentary crew to film their day-to-day lives in the months leading up to the Unholy Masquerade, an annual ball for all of the local supernatural beings that is the social event of the season. Hailing from radically different historical origins yet equally clueless about how to successfully navigate our tech-dependent 21st century, the roommates are joined by new vampire Nick who, along with having issues adopting the age-old rules governing vampiric behavior, introduces them to his still-human, thoroughly unflappable IT professional friend Stu. Juxtaposing squabbles over household chores with unstintingly gory feeding sessions, this horror comedy never allows its deadpan humor to grow stale.
