TRUE STORY

Having been fired from The New York Times in disgrace for taking liberties with the facts in a high-profile investigative piece, Michael Finkel (Jonah Hill) had retreated to Montana to attempt to resurrect his career, when he was informed that his identity had been used as an alias by Christian Longo (James Franco), an escaped fugitive accused of killing his wife and children, who had been recently arrested in Mexico. Intrigued and smelling a journalistic scoop, Finkel contacted Longo in prison in Oregon to find out more. Longo promises Finkel exclusive full disclosure in exchange for a delay in publication until after his trial has concluded and mentorship as an aspiring writer. As these two form an ever-closer and more complicated relationship, questions are raised about unreliable narration, manipulation, deception, and the very nature of truth.
