The Keeping Room is an intense Western with a feminist twist. Set in 1865, the Civil War is nearing an end, and three women are holed up on a farm with no hope their men will return. Augusta (Brit Marling), Louise (Hailee Steinfeld), and Mad have learned to survive on their own, but life is hard. When one of them falls ill and they’re forced to venture out for medicine, they confront two rogue soldiers who seem bent on destroying all that they’ve built. The Keeping Room is a gritty and uncompromising tale of survival that shatters both gender and genre conventions.
