In the quirky comedy The Grand Seduction, the citizens of a depressed Newfoundland village attempt to recruit a doctor in order to better their livelihoods. In the seaside village of Tickle Cove, the fishing industry has dried up and taken most of the jobs along with it, yet there is a glimmer of hope. A petroleum processing plant has set its sights on Tickle Cove, but only under one condition—they must have a practicing doctor in residence. It is up to the mayor (Brendan Gleeson) to find one; however, the doctor on loan from the city is unaware that he is going to become a permanent resident. It falls on the kindly citizens to ‘seduce’ him by transforming their town into a charming wonderland that caters to the unsuspecting doctor’s every interest. Inventive and cleverly written, Mick LaSalle of The San Francisco Chronicle says The Grand Seduction is “laugh-out-loud funny.”
