Toni is a preteen girl growing up in Cincinnati whose home away from home is the neighborhood community center. Following her big brothers lead, she fashions herself a boxer until she discovers dance and becomes a Lioness. The Lionesses are a drill team made up of older girls who are confident, experienced and sexy. But when things seem to be falling into place, a mysterious phenomenon begins to overtake the group, as each girl falls into a seizure state that’s both a mystery and a metaphor. Unpredictable and mesmerizing, The Fits is like a cinematic fever dream that chooses female empowerment over fear.
