SON OF SAUL

Academy Award Winner: Foreign Language Film

Dir: László Nemes / 2015 / Hungary, US, France, Israel, Bosnia and Herzegovina / Hungarian, Yiddish, German, Russian, Polish w/ English subtitles / 107 min / DCP

Auschwitz, 1944. Saul Ausländer is a Hungarian member of the Sonderkommando, the group of Jewish prisoners isolated from the camp and forced to assist the Nazis in the machinery of large-scale extermination. While working in one of the crematoria, Saul discovers the body of a boy he takes for his son. As the Sonderkommando plans a rebellion, Saul decides to carry out an impossible task: save the child’s body from the flames, find a rabbi to recite the mourner’s Kaddish and offer the boy a proper burial. Claude Lanzmann, director of the documentary Shoah, gave the film high praises, stating that “it’s a very new film, very original, very unusual. It’s a film that gives a very real sense of what it was like to be in the Sonderkommando. It’s not at all melodramatic. It’s done with a very great modesty.”
