OFS CINEMUSIC Presents: MONTEREY POP – 50th Anniversary Release! Join us for pre-show live music on Sunday 6/18

OFS CINEMUSIC Presents:
MONTEREY POP
50th Anniversary Release! New 4k Restoration!
Special video introduction by D.A. Pennebaker

On a beautiful June weekend in 1967, at the height of the Summer of Love, the first and only Monterey International Pop Festival roared forward, capturing a decade’s spirit and ushering in a new era of rock and roll. Monterey would launch the careers of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Otis Redding, but they were just a few among a wildly diverse cast that included Simon and Garfunkel, the Mamas and the Papas, the Who, the Byrds, Hugh Masekela, and the extraordinary Ravi Shankar. With his characteristic vérité style, D. A. Pennebaker captured it all, immortalizing moments that have become legend: Pete Townshend destroying his guitar, Jimi Hendrix burning his.
Dir: D. A. Pennebaker / 1968 / US / 78 min

SCREENING: JUNE 16 at 9:00PM, JUNE 17 at 6:30PM; JUNE 18 at 7:30PM
Box office opens 30 mins before showtime.

JOIN US SUNDAY 6/18 at 7:00 for live North Indian classical music by Stephanie Donchey and Lexi Rex

Stephanie  Donchey has been a devoted student of the sitar, and of Northern Indian classical music, for most of her adult life. She spent the better part of 10 years, living in India…in Benares (Varanasi),  beginning her sitar studies with the late Amarnath Mishra, a master sitarist of the Imdhadkhani garana,  (which is the Vilayet Khan vocal style, or garana, of sitar playing).  She remained a devoted disciple of Amarnath-ji until his death a few years ago.

Lexi Rex has been a student of tablas for over 12 years.  He has studied with Niti Ranjan Biswas and Prasant Mishra. He and Stephanie have been playing together for about 12 years. Alexei also visited India for the first time last year, and while there, he accompanied Deobrat Mishra, a well-known Benares sitar teacher/performer, during lessons. Alexei is a gifted visual artist and master tattoo artist and owns his own tattoo shop on Olympia’s Westside.
