MAPS TO THE STARS
In Maps to the Stars, director David Cronenberg explores the depths of the bodily fixation that permeates Hollywood. Julianne Moore plays Havana Segrand, a reclusive actress who worries that her career has washed up with her inevitable age. Her only solace lies in her weekly sessions with a shady doctor to the stars. Dr. Stafford Weiss (John Cusack) is determined to keep his clients happy and dependent in his questionable practice that holds a grim secret at its core. Meanwhile, Havana is obsessed with winning what she considers the role of her lifetime—playing her own mother on screen. Enter Agatha Weiss (Mia Wasikowska), the doctor’s long-lost daughter, who may hold the key to everything in her shadowy, wisp-like presence. Strange and alluring, Maps to the Stars is like a black comedy projected through a haunted veil of reality. A.O.
