LEVIATHAN

Leviathan

Nominated for the Oscar for Foreign Language Film, Leviathan is a biting, dramatic satire set in a beautiful seaside town in contemporary Russia. The story revolves around Nicolai, the owner of an auto repair shop whose family owns a coveted piece of land. Residents for generations in the small fishing village, life is quiet until the day the mayor decides he wants the valuable land for himself, and he’ll do anything to acquire it—no matter what the cost. What follows is a battle of wills fought through the courts and on into modern-day Russian politics where corruption rules over common sense, and an average man can be too easily lost in a sea of dishonesty and contempt. Justin Chang of Variety calls Leviathan “a modern masterpiece.”
