In Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter, a cinema-obsessed young woman travels across the ocean on an answer-seeking quest. Kumiko’s life in Tokyo is less than fulfilling. A mundane office job occupies her days, while her nights consist of sitting alone in her room, and ignoring her nagging mom who belittles the fact that she hasn’t started a family. Her luck changes on the day she finds an old VHS tape. The faded copy of the Coen brothers’ Fargo holds the answers to Kumiko’s seemingly pointless existence—she just knows it. So she makes her way to icy Minnesota and sets off on an event-filled journey to seek a fortune she has convinced herself is buried in the snow—right where Steve Buscemi left it…in the movie.
