The dreamlike and luminous Knight of Cups brings director Terrence Malick’s (Days of Heaven, Tree of Life) naturalistic filmmaking style to a modern world. Set in the midst of the Los Angeles film industry, Christian Bale plays Rick, a successful screenwriter who has reached a crossroads in his life. He exists in a place engulfed by glamour and vacuous pursuits of happiness that are gradually beginning to lose their luster. When Rick’s reality finally becomes oppressive, a door is opened to a truth that may hold the answers he seeks. Richard Brody of The New Yorker described the film as “an instant classic” and considered it “one of the great recent bursts of cinematic artistry, a carnival of images and sounds that have a sensual beauty, of light and movement, of gesture and inflection, rarely matched in any movie that isn’t Malick’s own.”
